VIDEO: WAC Commish Jeff Hurd Talks Future of Conference *UPDATED*
So everyone is talking about these WAC rumors. Well this isn’t a rumor. This is straight from the horse’s mouth. But the ambiguity leads to more rumors.
This video is a Q/A with WAC Commish Jeff Hurd at the WAC Football Media Day. I typed up some of the highlights:
No WAC Football (as a conference) in 2013
“We have gone east coast to west coast looking at options in various degrees of detail. And the bottom line is as we sit here today, I don’t believe personally that FBS football, as a conference, is feasible for 2013. Those avenues have been explored and the bottom line guys is I mean it’s just not there. It’s just not there for 2013…There simply aren’t enough schools available. We would need to have a minimum of 6 to, you have to have 8 FBS level, or 8 institutions that are moving to the FBS level, and there simply isn’t 6 of them available.”
WAC Football in 2014 of 2015? Maybe.
“I don’t know the answer to that. I wouldn’t rule it …READ MORE
*UPDATED* CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT: Appalachian State AD Charlie Cobb Gives An Update
Thanks to HapApp for the heads-up on this! The Winston-Salem Journal talked to Appalachian State AD Charlie Cobb, and he basically said everything is on the table:
“If you look at the FBS — Conference USA, what the Sun Belt might do and the Mid-American Conference is one that has had conversations about possible expansion — and then the WAC (with two football members remaining) has something of value in that it is an FBS league…
There are a lot of different conversations involving a lot of different scenarios and I don’t think any of them have really fleshed themselves out and risen to the level to where a number of interested schools can say there is a solution.… It still needs to evolve.”
Personally, unless Georgia Southern comes with us, I’d rather join the MAC than the Sun-Belt. Not because of geography, but because of direction.
The Sun Belt has already …READ MORE
TWEET: WAC & CAA Conference Meetings Update
For those of you excited to see what news came out of the WAC meeting today, the above tweet is all I got for you. But the chances of us ending up in the WAC seem slim at this point. I’ll keep you updated if I hear anything else.
What about the CAA you ask? Are Charleston/Davidson/Elon ditching us? Well according to the AJC they will be making some sort of announcement tomorrow (wed) regarding the results of their meeting. Don’t expect much in the way of details though.
CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT: C-USA Board of Directors to “Explore Membership Growth”
C-USA’s Board of Directors met for their annual meeting yesterday. They didn’t give out any new invitations, but unlike the Sun-Belt, they didn’t close the door either. To be exact, they SAID:
Continue to Explore Future Membership Growth
The conference announced in May that it had entered into membership agreements with six institutions to join eight current members, beginning with the 2013‐14 season. The Board agreed to continue its review of further expansion opportunities.
That sounds a lot like “We want to add a few schools, but we’re not in a rush.” The likely number they would add is 2 to go to 16 for football. ECU’s AD is on RECORD as saying: …READ MORE
June 1: WAC D-Day? Or Not So Much?
If you’re interested in the whole WAC-East scenario that App State may or may not be getting involved in, you probably already know today was an important day.
June 1 has been thrown around as the due date to reclassify to FBS because NCAA regulation 20.4.2.1.2 says: …READ MORE

Is this true? I have no idea. You guys know I share what I find and I let you make your own judgement. But if it is, one HAS to think this is football-only.
Who’s still in the WAC you ask? …READ MORE
