SoCon Expansion: Kennesaw State Now One Step Away from Football

kennesawstatestadium

The SoCon has been looking to add a few schools and Kennesaw State’s name has been dropped more than once.

For those of you who don’t know, Kennesaw State is located just 20 miles outside of Atlanta on top of (wouldn’t you know it) Kennesaw Mountain. They have a student population of 24,600 which makes them one of the larger possible SoCon adds.scrappytheowl

Their mascot is Scrappy the Owl. Speaking of crappy, they currently have the 11th worst D-I men’s basketball team in the country by RPI. (They should fit right in.)

They were D-II until the 2009-2010 season, and they actually won quite a few national championships at that level (not in football obviously). Then they started their transition into the D-I Atlantic Sun conference. They decided awhile back that they wanted football, after a 10 month study. But the A-Sun doesn’t sponsor football. That and their location makes them an obvious candidate for the SoCon or Big South.

There was only one problem, the Board of Regents did NOT approve the proposed student athletics fee increase. Instead they sent it to their business committee for further review. Today the business committee finally came out with their recommendation to the Board of Regents to approve the fee increase, calling it a “sound” plan.

Now the Board of Regents itself will vote on the proposal and will likely take the advice of their business committee and approve it. The school will play football in their soccer stadium (that was supposedly built with football in mind). They plan to renovate it but not expand it. It currently seats 8,000. Now all they need is a coach, a few players,…and a conference.

APP STATE WEEK 2: What Did We Learn?

Yesterday was an awesome day for football. There were some FCS over FBS upsets again. #18 Illinois State took down E Michigan by a huge margin, 31-14. Sacramento State, who upset Oregon State last year, used a last second field goal to triumph over Colorado 30-28. Finally, reigning FCS National Champ #2 NDSU, who beat Minnesota last year, proved they don’t need to rebuild by beating Colorado State 22-7.

But as far as FCS vs FCS, there were no bigger games than App State’s 35-27 victory over Montana. If you want, you can actually rewatch the game in its entirety on ESPN3.

Gone were the special teams mistakes of the ECU game. The penalties were cut by more than half, 5 for 42yds. In fact we had 0 penalties in the first half. The biggest stat of the night though was 0 turnovers for App, but 4 for Montana.

I said in my prediction that the turnover battle would decide the game. That’s often the case anyway, but it turned out to be very applicable in this game. Montana actually outgained us on the ground 176-157. They outgained us in the air as well, 307-260. Montana just made way more mistakes than us, even missing a crucial extra point that would have tied the game.

We’re off to a great start and should be ranked in the Top-10 this week for whatever that’s worth. Let’s take a look now at the “Other” games to watch from this past week. I didn’t have quite the prediction week I had last time, but not horrible, going 6-3 for 15-4 on the season. Frankly anyone who predicted The Citadel would take down Georgia Southern needs a mental health screening.

ECU – 10 / @ FBS #9 South Carolina – 40

ECU was held scoreless until the 2nd half in what can only be considered an ass-whooping. If anything, this game shows that there is likely a bigger gap between the FBS mid-majors and the so-called BCS teams, than there is between the elite FCS and the FBS mid-majors. Although, UL-Monroe might have something to say about that (they took down #8 Arkansas yesterday). Ultimately, ECU’s 5 turnovers doomed them (why didn’t they do that LAST week). We’ll find out how good ECU really is once they get into their C-USA schedule.

Coastal Carolina – 47 / Furman – 45 (3OT)

Although it didn’t quite have the “names” that our game did, this game seems to be the one you wanted to actually watch. After taking an early 10-0 lead, Coastal Carolina seemed to maintain control, going into the 4th quarter with a 17-6 lead. Then all hell broke loose. Furman put up 19 4th quarter points and it took a last second field goal by Coastal just to put it into overtime. Then the two teams traded touchdowns in 1st and double overtime. That’s when the mandatory 2-pt conversion tries came into play. The teams traded touchdowns again, but Furman was unable to convert their 2-pt conversion and that finally ended the game. When it was all said and done, Furman actually had less turnovers and more total yards than Coastal. I’m looking forward to playing both of these teams.

WEEK 2: The OTHER Games App State Fans Should Watch

Well in Week 1 I went 9-1 in my predictions (screwing up the one that mattered). Let’s see if I can continue the overall streak with week 2 games.

Although I call this segment the other games to “watch” I don’t actually recommend you watch all of these. I include them because they involve teams that App will play later on in the season, and seeing how they do will let us know a little about what to expect when we face them. So here we go:

Saturday, Sept 8

12:21 PM ECU @ FBS #9 South Carolina

Although we’re done with ECU for the season, how they do against a top-10 team might give us a hint as to where we’re really at. If ECU were to somehow upset USC, our loss against them doesn’t look half bad. If ECU get’s blown out on the other hand, it won’t give us too great of a feeling. South Carolina looked very beatable in their first game against Vanderbilt, winning only 17-13. That doesn’t mean ECU is the one to beat em though.

Viewing Options: SEC Network (regional) / ESPN 3 / ESPN Gameplan

Prediction: ECU 10 / South Carolina 31

5:00 PM Coastal Carolina @ Furman

This is one of the more interesting games of the week. We have to play both of these teams later on in the season. Just for our conference’s reputation we should be rooting for Furple. But in my visit to Coastal Carolina I had an amazing time and deep in my heart I’ll be rooting for them. Coastal Carolina beat a weak NC A&T team 28-13 in week 1, while Furman lost @ Samford in a close one 21-24. It will be interesting to see how Furman comes back after such a heartbreaking opener for them.

Viewing Options: Streaming Video / Streaming Audio / Live Stats

Prediction: Coastal Carolina 20 / Furman 26

6:00 PM #3 Georgia Southern @ The Citadel

I will be rooting for The Citadel 110% in this one. Sure that would ruin a lot of the hype for when we play GA Southern, but I’d like to see them lose a few early to get some insurance. Unfortunately The Citadel struggled early on in their game last week against a very weak Charleston Southern team. That doesn’t bode well for them, considering

WEEK 1 WRAP UP: What Did We Learn?

In my Week 1 predictions, I went 9-1. But wouldn’t you know it, the one I missed was the one that counted. As you already know, App State fell to ECU 35-13. The game was much closer than the scoreboard indicated, but no excuses, no  woulda-shoulda-couldas, we just didn’t quite get the job done.

But on the bright side, from what I saw, we have a spectacular team and we are going places. We have a lot of competition in the SoCon this year, but if we aren’t raising the trophy at the end of the season we won’t have anyone to blame but ourselves. We have the talent.

I think it’s pretty obvious that the main thing we can improve upon is special teams. Besides the obvious one, allowing a 90yard return for a TD, we also allowed another huge punt return that setup an easy TD, and we missed a (tough) Field Goal. However, the actual kickoffs and punts themselves looked fine. I think all of this was just a combination of it being the first game against the season and playing the toughest opponent on our schedule.

But we all watched the App State/ECU game, how did the “Other Games to Watch” go?

Mars Hill – 14 / @ Western Carolina – 42

Western Carolina once again takes down the only team they were able to beat last year. But this is another D-2 win, which still keeps their D-1 losing streak alive. I think the new coaches down there will manage 2 more wins though, which will be a vast improvement. Those Catamount fans better enjoy this one though, just in case.

___________________________________________________________________

Elon  – 0  / @ North Carolina – 62

While it’s hard to really judge how good an FCS team is against an ACC school like UNC, it doesn’t get any worse than that. I’m going to withhold judgment on Elon, but with that performance, it’s hard to see them as anything but a sub .500 team in this tough conference.

___________________________________________________________________

South Dakota- 24 / @ Montana – 35

We play Montana next week so this is an especially important game, which I’m sure all our players will be reviewing this week. Although Montana started off the game 10-0, Montana was actually losing 24-16 as late as the 3rd quarter. Then the Griz scored off of an interception return and …READ MORE

App State WEEK 1: The OTHER Games to Watch

FOOTBALL SEASON IS HERE!!!! Time to have a beer, forget all that conference realignment nonsense, and focus on football.

Obviously at noon on Saturday we will all be watching App State @ ECU. But watching football is an all weekend thing. What other games are relevant to our season?

Thursday, Aug 30

8:00PM Mars Hill @ Western Carolina

This won’t be on TV obviously, but I’ll be peeking in on the score occasionally. Mars Hill is Div-2 but they went 8-2 during the regular season last year, eventually losing in the 2nd round of the …READ MORE

Basketball: SoCon Hires Fmr Coach Dave Odom as Special Advisor

Remember back when the SoCon had its big annual meeting and we all expected to hear big conference realignment news? But then they had absolutely no conference realignment news and announced that they were going to hire a basketball coordinator to help the conference not suck at basketball anymore…well

They have hired that basketball coordinator, and his name is Dave Odom. He started off at ECU but ACC basketball fans should remember him as the guy who made Wake Forest not suck (back before they started sucking again). He coached Tim Duncan way back when. He reached the Sweet 16′s twice and the Elite 8 once. He also won the NIT one year.

Then he moved on to South Carolina where his biggest achievement was winning the NIT twice in a row. Overall he was a 3x ACC coach of the year and a 1x SEC coach of the year. He retired from coaching in 2008.

These days he’s the tournament chairman of the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational. Now he will also try to somehow get multiple SoCon teams into the NCAA tournament every year. His job description is to:

…work with Commissioner John Iamarino, league basketball coaches and administrators to address such matters as non-conference scheduling, participation in exempt tournaments, the operation of the conference tournament and institutional recruiting efforts.

Good luck with that. Last year the SoCon finished 23rd out of 31 Div-I conferences in Men’s basketball. He was a good coach, but I’m not really sure how he’s going to make a difference. I guess we need all the help we can get.

CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT: Sun Belt to Add Texas State & UT-Arlington

According to a report from MySanAntonio:

The Sun Belt Conference is expected to add Texas State University and UT Arlington for the 2013-14 season, sources said Monday.

Both are expected to play one season in the Western Athletic Conference before joining the Sun Belt next summer.

Reached by phone on Saturday, Sun Belt commissioner Karl Benson couldn’t comment on Texas State’s future in terms of conference affiliation.

But he did predict that Texas State will have a conference home in football in 2013.

“I will tell you that Texas State has established a strong foundation both athletically and academically,” Benson said.  “I don’t expect Texas State will be without a place to play football.”

So what does that mean for App? Is there an opening for App to jump on? Well let’s look at it: …READ MORE
