Final NFL Roster Cuts Announced: Did Former App Players Make the Cut? *UPDATED*

MADE THE CUT

WR Armanti Edwards (Carolina) – Carolina is taking an interesting approach to their roster cuts, announcing them a piece at a time. But according to the Charlotte Observer, Armanti has made the roster! My biggest concern was that he would get cut and then not get picked up by another team. I’m glad they realized his potential and decided to keep him around. Now if only they could find a way to give him more playing time!

WR Brian Quick (St. Louis) – As the first pick of the 2nd round of the NFL draft, Brian Quick is a lock. Although only some of the cuts have been announced, there’s nothing to worry about here.

RB Travaris Cadet (New Orleans) – The under-the-radar breakout star of the preseason officially makes the team! His next challenge will be finding playing time on a roster with 5 RB.

S Corey Lynch (San Diego) – This is one that many were worried might be on the wrong side of the line today. Luckily those fears were put to rest as he is officially on the team!

LB D.J. Smith (Green Bay) – Officially makes the 53 man roster, no surprise since starter Desmond Bishop is injured. Hopefully we’ll get to see D.J. on the field a lot this season!

DE Jason Hunter (Denver) – Officially doesn’t get cut. But it’s not all good news here. As you may recall, he was seriously injured on Aug 14 during training camp, and is now listed as an injured reserve. He’s pretty much gone for the season, barring a miracle.

OG Daniel Kilgore (San Francisco) – According to reports, Kilgore is one of 8 offensive lineman to make the roster in San Francisco. He’ll be the backup, but I’m sure he’ll see some playing time at center.

DID NOT MAKE THE CUT

De’Andre Presley (San Diego) – This is truly disappointing. De’Andre was and is an incredible player who was trying to make a tough switch from QB to DB at the last second. Unfortunately the Chargers released him today. I hope he finds a new home soon.

*UPDATE* S Mark Legree (Chicago) – After being drafted by the Seahawks, then playing on the practice squads for the Cardinals, Jets, & 49ers, Legree was signed to a 1-year contract with the Bears this season. But it turns out the Bears still released him on waivers. He still has a chance at being picked up by another team or getting on a practice squad, including the one for the Bears if no one else picks him up.

WR Dexter Jackson (NY Jets) – Although he was cut last week, I included him here in the interest of covering every App player that started the preseason on a team. As one of the hero’s of the Michigan game, his name will ever be cemented in the minds of the App State fans who witnessed it. Hopefully he will be get picked up by someone else. But on a side note, thank God I don’t have to watch the Jets anymore.

Steve Reed, the Associated Press Sports Writer for Charlotte, was on ESPN730 and he doesn’t seem to think Armanti will make it past the roster cuts this year. Skip to 3:02 to hear the conversation.

“Armanti, I just, to me right now he’s very much on the bubble, and in my opinion on the outside looking in. And why I say that is cause you got Brandon LaFell you got Steve Smith as your starters. I think they’re going to keep David Gettis…He’s 3, And then Kealoha Pilares & Joe Adams they’re your kickoff and punt returners right now. If you keep both of them they’re 4 and 5. And Louis Murphy is another guy battling for that #3 spot you know, so maybe that’s 6.

I don’t know that I’ve seen too many NFL teams carry more than 6. I just think if you just start counting up numbers it’s going to be awful hard for Armanti to stay in that mix. I think, you know, it’s not going to surprise me if he’s not here at the end of this 2nd cut.”

The big dates Armanti has to watch out for are:

August 27 – Roster cut down to 75 players
August 31 – Roster cut down to 53 players

Although I’m a Carolina Panthers fan,  I’m an even bigger Armanti Edwards fan and part of me hopes he DOES get cut. Frankly, I’m not sure he’s getting a fair shake with the Panthers, and that’s unfortunate. They’re playing him with the 3rd team. Asking him to put up big numbers with just a few plays and Jimmy Clausen at the helm with no time to throw is ridiculous.

VIDEO: Armanti Edwards Scores a Touchdown at Panthers Practice

I had heard about this play from a couple of days ago and I finally found the video. His punt return days are likely over, but former App State QB Armanti Edwards shows that he has some potential at the WR position.

Skip to :38 to watch him score. Now all we need is for the Panthers to give him some more playing time so he can do it when it counts.

App State in the NFL: San Diego Chargers Sign DB Corey Lynch

According to GoBlueRidge, DB Corey Lynch AKA “My Hero” signed with the San Diego Chargers today in free agency. He started off with the Cincinnati Bengals and was most recently assigned to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This past season he was good for 21 tackles and 4 assists.

Since DeAndre Presley also signed to the Chargers they might just be one of my new favorite teams. Let’s hope we see a lot of playing time for the most hated man in Michigan.

TWEET: TE Ben Jorden Possibly to Join Carolina Panthers by Weeks End

Former App State standout TE Ben Jorden participated in the Carolina Panthers rookie mini-camp this past weekend. He is hoping to know if they will pick him up by the end of the week. If they end up passing on him I’m sure he will find a team somewhere or possibly look to a pro-league outside the U.S. like the CFL. I’m already a Panthers fan, so here’s hoping they keep him at home!

The News & Observer has a nice WRITEUP about the camp that features him. Former App State DT Gordon Witte also tried out over the weekend with the New Orleans Saints.

App State in the NFL: Both Cadet & Witte to Attend Saints Rookie Minicamp

According to the New Orleans Saints Rookie Minicamp ROSTER, not 1 but 2 former Appalachian State players will be busting their butts over the weekend. RB Travaris Cadet was picked up in free agency by the Saints, so no surprise there. But DT Gordon Witte will also be in attendance trying his best to make the team. He was a 2-time state champion in wrestling and an all-conference player back in high school, but got injured early on at App and had to medical redshirt his first year. By the end of his collegiate career he was a staple on the defensive line, and at 6’4″ 314lbs he’s got size. I’m not a Saints fan but if 2 former players end up on the team I might just be saying Who Dat before too long.

According to the Saints website, the minicamp involves 2 practices today & tomorrow, and 1 on Sunday. Good luck fellas.

TWEET: DT Chris Aiken’s Agent Talking to The Ravens and The Patriots *UPDATED*

@ ok…its between the ravens & patriots tho my agent hooking things up
@BIG_HEAVY_CIA
C.I. Aiken

Hope this works out for him. Chris Aiken has a great story. He served in the Army and did 2 tours in Iraq, before going back to play football at a junior college. He even won a national junior college championship, which is when App State took notice of him. Now it looks like his road will lead him all the way to the NFL.

NFL: New Orleans Saints Sign RB Travaris Cadet in Free Agency

UPDATE: Story is now confirmed by GoASU.

Just like with DeAndre Presley to the Chargers, I’ve got no “official” sources to prove this one. But according to some reliable sources on the Twitter Universe, Travaris Cadet is signing with the New Orleans Saints in free agency. The contract details are still being worked out apparently. According to one tweet, he is receiving a $30K signing bonus.

He goes to a team devastated by scandal, but hopefully he can make his mark on what I think will probably be a losing team. (To Saints Fans that keep emailing me: Yes I know Vegas has good odds for you so maybe I’m wrong, but I just don’t see it.) I’ll update this once I get some more official sources.

NFL: San Diego Chargers Pick CB DeAndre Presley in Free Agency

UPDATE: Story is now confirmed by GoASU.

Can’t find anything in the way of official news (I’ll update this when I do), but according to the Twitter Universe – DeAndre Presley has been picked up by the San Diego Chargers in Free Agency. Apparently the contract details are still being ironed out but it’s a done deal.

It’s not really surprising that he didn’t get drafted. He has the talent, but he hasn’t had much experience at CB – since he played QB most of his career. Hopefully the Chargers give him a fair shot to prove himself. I think they got themselves a steal.
