EXCLUSIVE: E-Mail Obtained Via FOIA Request Reveals Sun Belt Expansion Candidates

envelope

If you haven’t already read my previous article, I submitted a FOIA request for conference realignment related documents from both Appalachian State & Georgia Southern. I received Georgia Southern’s documents today.

But after receiving the documents, I got an e-mail from Georgia Southern with additional documents that were not discovered in time to physically mail. There is a time limit associated with responding to a FOIA request in the state of GA, thus why they didn’t wait. Since my FOIA request specified that digital copies were acceptable, they e-mailed these additional documents.

In this e-mail, Georgia Southern’s AD Thomas Kleinlein received a “SBC EADA Fact Sheet” (Sun Belt Conference – Equity in Athletics Data Analysis - Fact Sheet) from Karl Benson the Sun Belt’s Commissioner. It basically compares financial numbers of a bunch of schools.

Kleinlein then forwarded it to someone named Jeff (within the athletics department?) asking for amplifying info on each school. It seems a bunch of the text of the e-mail was withheld by the school, unless Karl Benson’s email really did just say “and the sport expense data” and that’s it.

The fact sheet itself is the real jewel here, because it comes from Karl Benson and lists every Sun Belt school, then has the words “Potential Members” followed by a collection of school names. Note that I have no idea if these schools are SERIOUS candidates, but at the very least, these are schools that being somewhat considered.

This is the original copy of the attachment: SBC EADA Fact Sheet.PDF

Note that the date of the attachment is only today’s date because it was forwarded to me today from their lawyers. The date of the email was Dec 21, 2012 @ 11:31AM.

The schools it lists are:

Appalachian State
Delaware
Georgia Southern
Idaho
Illinois State
Jacksonville State
James Madison
Lamar
Liberty
Missouri State
New Mexico State
Richmond
Sam Houston State
Towson
UT Chattanooga

I follow Sun Belt expansion as close as anyone in the game. Most of these are the usual suspects. Some of these are schools, like UT-Chattanooga and Illinois State, I thought only people on message boards were talking about. But apparently the Sun Belt is actually considering them as well. Other schools like Richmond & Towson seemed to come out of left field for me, but make sense in a way.

For those of you that wanted some kind of smoking gun/official invite, I’m sorry. I just requested the FOIA and this is what they gave me. I hope you find it interesting. Check back soon for more documents from my FOIA request.

CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT: The Basketball Facilities of Potential Sun Belt Candidates

Sun_Belt_Logo

With SDSU’s decision to stay in the MWC, I expect some big conference realignment moves soon. I previously compared the football facilities of potential Sun Belt candidates. That article was so popular I thought we’d continue with the basketball facilities. Let’s get right to it:

Appalachian State – Holmes Convocation Center

appalachianstatebasketball

Official Capacity: 8,325
2012 Avg Men’s Attendance: 1,761
Current Men’s RPI: 274
2012 Avg Women’s Attendance: 445
Current Women’s RPI: 119
Notable: 300-meter Mondo track circles the upper concourse and is used by indoor track & field. Complete with “HLES offices, classrooms, state-of-the-art laboratories, team areas and retractable seating for concerts, special events, volleyball and basketball competition and more.”

Bottom Line: Although App State is a football school, our basketball facilities are arguably nicer than our football facilities. What’s with the GIGANTIC A logo in the middle though? Not a fan. I’m also not a big fan of the old school scoreboard. But in general, we have the nicest facilities in the SoCon (except maybe Chattanooga). On the performance end, we have the 2nd worst Men’s team and the 2nd best Women’s team on this list (based on RPI). But I think our men are getting much better. Anyways, no one is adding us for our basketball.

Georgia Southern – W.S. Hanner Fieldhouse

Official Capacity: 4,358
2012 Avg Men’s Attendance: 1,918
Current Men’s RPI: 255
2012 Avg Women’s Attendance: 1,249
Current Women’s RPI: 325
Notable: ”During the summer of 1995, the University completed a $500,000 renovation to Hanner Fieldhouse. Wooden bleachers at floor level were replaced with chairback seats, new floor graphics were painted …READ MORE

CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT: The Football Facilities of Potential Sun Belt Candidates

Sun_Belt_Logo

1/10 UPDATE: Karl Benson did a podcast interview (Click HERE to listen) in which he discusses realignment. In it he says the Sun Belt “has a plan” and that the options make sense geographically and are “like” institutions.

1/17 UPDATE: Added NMSU Stadium planned enhancements.

_______________

The Lafayette-Advertiser put up an ARTICLE today on why the Sun Belt is still considering its options. Check it out, it’s got some interesting quotes from Sun Belt Commissioner Karl Benson.

The candidates named are the usual suspects: Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, New Mexico State, Idaho, Lamar, Liberty, & Jacksonville State. Here is a map of where those schools are located, in comparison to the current membership. The candidates are in Red, try not to laugh at Idaho.

So how do the schools compare in their readiness for the Sun Belt? Facilities haven’t been the driving force at conference realignment, but it’s a factor nonetheless. In my opinion it might be an eliminating factor for some of the schools:

Appalachian State – Kidd-Brewer Stadium

appalachianstatestadium

Official Capacity: 23,150
2011 Avg Attendance: 26,211
2011 FCS Attendance Rank: #1
Notable Extras: Indoor Practice Facility, Fieldturf “Revolution” artificial surface
Planned Enhancements: Released a mockup of permanent endzone seating, a 3rd upper deck, and a new dorm behind the stadium where the current field house is. No timetable, just a mockup.
appstatestadiumenhancements
Bottom line: Would be one of the better stadiums in the Sun Belt right off the bat. I have always hated the track though and I could definitely do without the old field house.

SERIOUSLY?: Reported Frontrunners for Sun Belt are NMSU, Idaho, & GA Southern

Unfreakingbelievable. (If this is true.)

According to CBS Sports, the Sun Belt might be even dumber than we thought.

Idaho, New Mexico State and Georgia Southern are on the Sun Belt’s list of schools to replace Middle Tennessee State and Florida Atlantic, CBSSports.com has learned.

There are only 3 possibilities.

1. This report is wrong or incomplete. (I hope so.)

2. The Sun Belt really is that stupid. (Probably.)

3. Appalachian State’s administration already turned down the invite

Well option 3 is obviously incorrect based on App State AD Charlie Cobb’s very recent quotes in the Winston-Salem Journal:

“I would think we’re …READ MORE

CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT: Sun Belt Will NOT Add App State This Year (or Anyone Else)

Oh Sun Belt Conference, just when I thought you couldn’t get any dumber…you go and add UT-Arlington….AND TOTALLY REDEEM YOURSELF!!!

Just kidding…who the hell is UT-Arlington? I’ve LIVED in Texas and I’d never heard of them until the Sun Belt decided they HAD to have them.

According to CBS Sports, the Sun Belt had their little conference meeting thing and decided they wanted UT-Arlington and no one else. Sun Belt commissioner Karl Benson said: …READ MORE

TWEET: TE Ben Jorden Possibly to Join Carolina Panthers by Weeks End

Former App State standout TE Ben Jorden participated in the Carolina Panthers rookie mini-camp this past weekend. He is hoping to know if they will pick him up by the end of the week. If they end up passing on him I’m sure he will find a team somewhere or possibly look to a pro-league outside the U.S. like the CFL. I’m already a Panthers fan, so here’s hoping they keep him at home!

The News & Observer has a nice WRITEUP about the camp that features him. Former App State DT Gordon Witte also tried out over the weekend with the New Orleans Saints.

App State in the NFL: Both Cadet & Witte to Attend Saints Rookie Minicamp

According to the New Orleans Saints Rookie Minicamp ROSTER, not 1 but 2 former Appalachian State players will be busting their butts over the weekend. RB Travaris Cadet was picked up in free agency by the Saints, so no surprise there. But DT Gordon Witte will also be in attendance trying his best to make the team. He was a 2-time state champion in wrestling and an all-conference player back in high school, but got injured early on at App and had to medical redshirt his first year. By the end of his collegiate career he was a staple on the defensive line, and at 6’4″ 314lbs he’s got size. I’m not a Saints fan but if 2 former players end up on the team I might just be saying Who Dat before too long.

According to the Saints website, the minicamp involves 2 practices today & tomorrow, and 1 on Sunday. Good luck fellas.
