WEEK 3: The OTHER Games App State Fans Should Watch

Once again, I take a look at the “other” games to watch for the week. I gotta be honest, besides our game, this week kinda sucks. But I gotta make my predictions. Right now I’m 15-4 on the season. So here we go:

Thursday, Sept 13

7:00PM D-II Glenville State @ Chattanooga

I always write this article on Thursday, but because this is a Thursday game I’m a little late. Right now, at the half, Chatty is up 21-0. I think it’s pretty safe to say I would have picked them over Div-II Glenville State anyway.

The funniest thing about this game is the conference that Glenville State is joining. It literally is the “Knockoff” conference. First off it’s called the “Mountain East” and features notable schools Notre Dame College, West Liberty, University of Charleston, Virginia Wise, and West Virginia State. Subtract one word from any of those and I’ve heard of them!

Saturday, 15 September

1:30PM Liberty @ #14 Montana *UPDATE*

I can’t believe I almost forgot about Montana! They’re back at home, but they’re playing Liberty, one of the best 0-2 teams in the country. The Flames almost took down Wake Forest in their first game, but ultimately fell 20-17. Then they had a tough 31-24 loss against Norfolk State. They will be really itching for a win when they get to Missoula this week. I think Montana is really good though and  I doubt they lose at home.

Prediction: Liberty 17 / Montana 27

3:00PM D-II West Virginia State @ Elon

Last week West Virginia State lost to NC A&T 77-0. I think that might be all we need to know for this one.

Viewing Options: Streaming Video / Live Audio / Live Stats

Prediction: WVSU 0 / Elon 77

3:00PM Samford @ Gardner-Webb

So far Gardner-Webb is 0-2, losing to Wofford 34-7 and Richmond 41-8. Samford isn’t quite as good as those schools, but they’re good enough. Samford should improve to 3-0 and take a lot of confidence into their game with Western Carolina next week.

Viewing Options: Streaming Video / Live Audio

Prediction: Samford 35 / Gardner-Webb 3

3:00PM Furman @ FBS #11 Clemson

This might be the toss-up game of the week, but I think I have to give the edge to Clemson at home. But seriously, you gotta feel bad for the Paladins. They start off with a 3 pt loss to Samford and a 2pt triple overtime loss to Coastal Carolina. They could very well be 2-0, but after this week they will be 0-2-1.

Prediction: Furman 10 / Clemson 55

3:30PM ECU @ Southern Miss

Southern Miss lost to Nebraska 49-20 in week 1, then they had a bye week to help prepare for this game. ECU is coming off of a tough loss of their own, a 48-10 whooping at South Carolina. This is a difficult game to predict, but I think with the extra week off to prepare and the 12th man on their side, Southern Miss gets the W.

Prediction: ECU 23 / Southern Miss 28

6:00PM #20 Eastern Kentucky @ Coastal Carolina

Here is my pick for upset of the week, if you want to call it that. Coastal is 2-0 and playing at home against a ranked team. They are going to show up ready to play. Eastern Kentucky on the other hand is 1-1 and on the road. What Coastal Carolina needs to watch out for is Eastern Kentucky’s run defense. They held Morehead State to just 9 yards on the ground last week. Yup that’s right, 9. Luckily Coastal puts up most of its yards in the air anyway. I think they win another squeaker.

Prediction: Eastern Kentucky 20 / Coastal Carolina 24

7:00PM Western Carolina @ #9 Wofford

In the first 2 weeks, Wofford outscored its two opponents by a total of 106-7. Granted, 82 of those were against D-II Lincoln but it’s still domination. It’s hard to believe but WCU might be the most difficult opponent they’ve faced all season. Will we see another Citadel over Georgia Southern type upset? Hell if that was crazy, this would be insanity. I don’t see it happening, but boy do I hope I’m wrong.

Prediction: Western Carolina 17 / Wofford 37

#11 Georgia Southern – Bye Week

The Stink has an extra week to think about their loss to The Citadel and get ready for Elon at home.

AD Charlie Cobb to Southern Miss?: Decision Delayed, USM Pres Resigns *UPDATED*

Read first: “Athletic Director Saga Gets Interesting: Cobb’s Competitor Wrapped in Scandal

What a mess. Southern Miss needs an athletic director and they are torn between taking App State’s AD Charlie Cobb OR hiring their interim AD who is dealing with 2 workplace harassment accusations.

Well the person that was going to make that decision was USM President Martha Saunders – who has now resigned! Now the AD hire will likely be delayed until a new University President hire is made.

Athletic Director Saga Gets Interesting: Cobb’s Competitor Wrapped in Scandal

So if you’ve been living under a rock: Southern Miss is looking for an AD and they’ve narrowed it down to 2 finalists, App State’s AD Charlie Cobb & current USM interim AD Jeff Hammond.

Well it looks like Charlie Cobb’s stock may be rising. Jeff Hammond, former Army Major General, has now had a 2nd complaint filed against him and the University with the EEOC. Two female associate AD’s have resigned. The newest accuser alleges that Hammond verbally abused and bullied her to the point where she had to quit. In the original case, the accuser says she was passed over for the interim AD position despite having 25 years of experience. …READ MORE

AD Charlie Cobb: 1 of 2 Finalists for So. Miss Job, Decision by Weeks End

According to an exclusive report from WDAM, the rumor we reported earlier in the week that 5 candidates were interviewed in Dallas over the weekend was in fact true (and Charlie Cobb was one of them). Going into the interviews, reports said that App State AD Charlie Cobb was the lead candidate for the same job at So. Miss.

This report states that coming out of the interviews he is one of 2 lead candidates, the other being current interim So. Miss AD Jeff Hammond. The report also states that the decision could be made by the end of the week. The need to hire a new basketball coach is apparently speeding up the AD hiring process. No offense Charlie but I hope Hammond gets the job!

App State Rap Video: Best One I’ve Heard All Day

File this under so bad it’s good. It’s hot hot…oh God not again.

My favorite line (cause it’s random but true):

Rivers just snake and crawl…

If it rains you better not park…

anywhere close to the mall.

Other (Real) News:

  • AD Charlie Cobb: I tried tirelessly to dig up some more news on Charlie Cobb’s possible departure to Southern Mississippi. The only thing I found was that some guy posted on a Southern Miss Message Board on Thu that “I understand 5 (candidates) will be interviewed in Dallas this weekend.” and another said “Heard this as well. 1 will be interviewed tonite and 4 will be interviewed on Friday.” No idea if that’s true or not but it’s all I got.
  • Baseball: The stink took game-two 13-3. We should probably enjoy our #27 ranking while it lasts (it will likely be gone next week). We’re still #1 in the SoCon though. We go for the series win tomorrow @ 1:30pm.

UH OH: AD Charlie Cobb to So. Miss?

According to the Hattiesburg-American, App State Athletic Director Charlie Cobb is one of the leading candidates, out of a handful of names, for Southern Mississippi’s  AD position. He is the only candidate currently listed by name.

The Hattiesburg American has learned that Appalachian State athletic director Charlie Cobb has emerged as a strong contender for the job headed into the interview process, and that a new athletic director could be named soon.

The Watauga Democrat is also reporting on the above story, saying: …READ MORE
