CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT: MTSU & FAU Move to C-USA; Opening for App State in the Sun Belt?

Sorry about the crappy quality of these maps, but if I thought they were going to be accurate for longer than a day or two I would put more work into them.

Yes that’s right, C-USA has added Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) and Florida Atlantic University (FAU), stealing both away from the Sun Belt. This comes just a day after Tulane & ECU left C-USA for the Big East. Sure C-USA could still add App State, but our chances just dropped tremendously in the short term.

ECU joined the Big East in football only and at least one news source says they have found a home for their olympic sports in the CAA. So much for a new SoCon rivalry. So how do we get the hell out of here?

Well there are at least 2 openings for App in the …READ MORE

VIDEO: WAC Commish Jeff Hurd Talks Future of Conference *UPDATED*

So everyone is talking about these WAC rumors. Well this isn’t a rumor. This is straight from the horse’s mouth. But the ambiguity leads to more rumors.

This video is a Q/A with WAC Commish Jeff Hurd at the WAC Football Media Day. I typed up some of the highlights:

No WAC Football (as a conference) in 2013

“We have gone east coast to west coast looking at options in various degrees of detail. And the bottom line is as we sit here today, I don’t believe personally that FBS football, as a conference, is feasible for 2013. Those avenues have been explored and the bottom line guys is I mean it’s just not there. It’s just not there for 2013…There simply aren’t enough schools available. We would need to have a minimum of 6 to, you have to have 8 FBS level, or 8 institutions that are moving to the FBS level, and there simply isn’t 6 of them available.”

WAC Football in 2014 of 2015? Maybe.

“I don’t know the answer to that. I wouldn’t rule it …READ MORE

App State Spokesman on CAA Talks: App is Still Pursuing FBS

According to an article from the Watauga Democrat, Appalachian State Spokesman Mike Flynn said earlier today that:

“There are no new developments in Appalachian’s ongoing pursuit of a conference that sponsors FBS football,”

He could have said “no comment” but he said a little bit more than that. He basically said we’re not interested because they’re not FBS. I want to go FBS as much as anyone, but I hope they know something I don’t. We aren’t getting a C-USA invite unless we pick up our campus and physically move it. Whoever the C-USA does add, won’t be revealed for at least a year. We aren’t getting a Sun Belt invite, because they literally said they aren’t going to offer anyone else (unless they get raided again). And the WAC thing isn’t happening.

So where is this mythical FBS offer going to come from? The MAC? I doubt it. If Davidson, Charleston, Furman, and Elon do leave for the CAA, frankly, we would be stupid to stay put. We’ll be playing against powerhouses like Kennesaw State and Campbell before you know it. A 10-year moratorium banning FCS-FBS moves has been rumored for awhile. If we don’t get an invite before then, we’ll be stuck playing Western Carolina for 10 years when we could at least be playing Villanova or JMU.

The choice might not be between the CAA and FBS. The choice is probably between a stripped down SoCon or a reenergized CAA. Given those choices, do we still want to hang around here only to be left at the FBS altar?

There are risks either way. I think best case scenario is the status-quo. No one in the SoCon leaves and we stick it out for 1 to 10 years until we get an FBS invite. But if those teams leave and we don’t, it might just be time to hit the panic button.
