SoCon Expansion: Kennesaw State Now One Step Away from Football

kennesawstatestadium

The SoCon has been looking to add a few schools and Kennesaw State’s name has been dropped more than once.

For those of you who don’t know, Kennesaw State is located just 20 miles outside of Atlanta on top of (wouldn’t you know it) Kennesaw Mountain. They have a student population of 24,600 which makes them one of the larger possible SoCon adds.scrappytheowl

Their mascot is Scrappy the Owl. Speaking of crappy, they currently have the 11th worst D-I men’s basketball team in the country by RPI. (They should fit right in.)

They were D-II until the 2009-2010 season, and they actually won quite a few national championships at that level (not in football obviously). Then they started their transition into the D-I Atlantic Sun conference. They decided awhile back that they wanted football, after a 10 month study. But the A-Sun doesn’t sponsor football. That and their location makes them an obvious candidate for the SoCon or Big South.

There was only one problem, the Board of Regents did NOT approve the proposed student athletics fee increase. Instead they sent it to their business committee for further review. Today the business committee finally came out with their recommendation to the Board of Regents to approve the fee increase, calling it a “sound” plan.

Now the Board of Regents itself will vote on the proposal and will likely take the advice of their business committee and approve it. The school will play football in their soccer stadium (that was supposedly built with football in mind). They plan to renovate it but not expand it. It currently seats 8,000. Now all they need is a coach, a few players,…and a conference.

AUDIO: App State Head Coach Scott Satterfield on the David Glenn Show

Today was national signing day and head football coach Scott Satterfield was on the David Glenn Show to talk about it. Take a full listen, but here is my favorite quote from the interview:

The effect that being a former App State QB has had on recruiting:

I think the fact that I bleed black & gold, I played here, blood sweat & and tears were here, for the period of time that I played. Not only that, I’ve coached here for 13 seasons. I mean so obviously this is my school. I just believe it down to my core. Some of these guys, they are making alot of money to coach at these schools and you know, so their excitement comes from their paycheck so to speak. Mine comes from down deep. I really and truly believe in this school…It’s an easy sell.

FACILITY UPGRADES: App State Announces Strategic Plan

appstatestadiumenhancements

Appalachian State announced its new strategic plan today. You can view the full plan HERE.

In case you’re too lazy to read it, here are some of the highlights:

*Planned Facility Enhancements (Just the highlights)

  • Football – Add premium seating and general seating
  • Track & Field/Field Hockey – Permanent facilities
  • Basketball – Establish an alternate practice location for basketball
  • Basketball – Construct a weight room in the Holmes Center
  • Baseball - Expand stadium seating to include all chair-back seating
  • Baseball - On-site weight room
  • Softball - Construct an indoor hitting facility
  • Tennis - Develop indoor facility
  • Soccer – Possibly build new on-campus facility
  • Golf - Develop a driving range/short game practice area

Does this mean we are finally getting rid of the track around the football stadium? It didn’t spell that out, but it did say we were finding a new home for the track. If so, this is the facility enhancement I’m most looking forward to.

*Secondary reference is now “App State” not “ASU”

Thank goodness. As much as we would like to think we own “ASU” everyone immediately thinks of Arizona State. App State is our brand and personally I like it better anyway.

*Change the official website from GoASU.com to AppStateSports.com

I never did like GoASU as a name. Definitely an improvement.

*Cheerleading & Band Travel No Longer Funded with “Athletics” Money

I don’t really care how they’re funded, as long as they’re funded. If it means that more money is available for other athletics stuff, and cheerleading & band travel still get their money from somewhere, it sounds good to me.

*The slogan “No Equal” is no more.

It was getting old anyway. “Always Attack” anyone?

Overall, I think it’s an excellent plan. But I would make building a new track, and removing/covering up the old one, priority #1.

Around the SoCon: Furman Begins Construction of New Tower/Football Complex

furmanstadiumconstruction

Furman has begun construction on its new $12 million football complex. It looks kinda small, but definitely nice. According to the Furman website, the plans include:

  • Revamping the press box tower into a five-story building with a two-story football operations complex.
  • Building new locker rooms, coaches’ offices and meeting space and developing a new fan-friendly “Heritage Hall.”
  • Building a club level area with concessions and special seating, new presidential and corporate suites, and a high-tech press box.

When you compare it to what they currently have, you can see how badly they need the upgrade:

Here is a new video update on the construction:

AUDIO: ESPN730 Interviews New App State Head Coach Scott Satterfield

satterfield

(If the audio player above doesn’t load, click HERE)

New Head Coach Scott Satterfield appeared on 3 radio shows today, one of them being ESPN730 “The Pulse”. He talks about the interview process, the advantage of already being familiar with the program, and his family’s reaction to his hiring. It’s definitely worth a listen, but the most interesting question for me was the last one:

Have you had a chance to have any communication with Coach Moore?
I have. I talked to him, and you know, he’s moving on to the next chapter of his life, whatever that will be. I’m sure he’s going to very successful in whatever he does.

SOURCE: Scott Satterfield to be Announced As Next Head Coach at App State *CONFIRMED*

Before I begin, this is a blog, not the New York Times. I don’t have editors, fact-checkers, confirmed sources, or any of that. If any newspaper wants to quote this blog as a source (it’s happened), let me know so I can stop reading your newspaper.

That being said, according to one main source and a combination of other less specific sources (sounds legit!), Scott Satterfield will be our next head coach. To give you word for word what my main source says:

…the decision has been made. It’s Satterfield. The plan is to announce after he returns from the Shrine Bowl.

After the Shrine Bowl you say? Well that part makes sense, since he definitely is/was at the Shrine Bowl (@WinTheGame = Scott Satterfield):

Headed to Shrine Bowl practice. Excited to see some great players! Can’t believe it’s been so long since I played in this game! Great week!

Coach Justin Stepp

Rise & grind #AppNation! Excited to get out & see some future mountaineers w @ & @ #AlwaysAttack #AppStateFootball

Coach Justin Stepp

Other sources, including App State’s student radio show, have said that the new coach will be announced this week and that Scott Satterfield was interviewed this past weekend:

Sources tell us that the new head football coach at #AppState could be named as early as tomorrow or as late as Friday.
@SOTW_Radio
Sports Out The WASU

#AppState RT @: told Scott Satterfield “interviews” this weekend. Goes well it’s his.

It’s not official until it’s official. Don’t shoot the messenger if this ends up being wrong, I’m just passing along what I hear. But everything, and I mean everything, is pointing to an announcement that Scott Satterfield will be our next head coach.

_______

In other news, two emails from AD Charlie Cobb to Coach Moore and Chancellor Peacock, regarding Moore’s forced retirement, were obtained by a newspaper via FOIA request. Interesting to say the least.

UPDATE

This story has been CONFIRMED by the Winston-Salem Journal. Coach Satterfield will be announced as the new head coach tomorrow.

FCS BRACKET CHALLENGE: Round 2 Leaderboards

Well as everyone should already know, Appalachian State’s football season ended (brutally) yesterday by a blocked extra point in overtime 38-37.
