1st Annual App-ademy Awards: and the First Appy Goes To…

Welcome to the 1st Annual App-ademy Awards, where we celebrate the fact that there ain’t shit going on and we need something to talk about. (Is it football season yet?!)

I’ll be giving out various awards to the most deserving schools and players in the world.

How does it work? Well, first I come up with the category. Then I form a 1-person committee to determine the nominees. Then all of the writers of AppStateNation (AKA me) cast their official ballots to determine the winner.

It’s a very complicated process, but just know the winner is absolute Gospel and if you disagree you are wrong and also stupid.

Now for the first category/nominees:

College Football Team Most Likely to Go Undefeated in 2012-13

*USC Trojans – They return 17 starters after finishing 12-2 last year. Their schedule is pretty light with the exceptions of playing Oregon at home and a weakened Stanford team. Their first likely loss is in the national championship vs whatever SEC team feels like winning it this year.

*Appalachian State – You shouldn’t be surprised to see us on this list. I mean this IS an App State blog and I can pick whatever team I want! That being said if we can get past ECU it is very doable. We don’t play for moral victories here so don’t be surprised if we come out of week 1 with a W. However, my guess is we finish with 1 or 2 losses going into the postseason.

*North Dakota State – The reigning FCS national champion has a legitimate shot at an undefeated season. They should be favored in every game, their hardest one being at Colorado State, an extremely weak FBS school. They probably won’t lose until they meet us in the playoffs.

*UNC-Charlotte – Why are they on this list, you ask? I mean they don’t even have a football team yet, right? Well that’s the genius part. If they don’t have a team, and don’t play any games…THEY CAN’T LOSE!!!

I included the full audio for you up above (Skip to 2:30) . He says a lot of positives, but most of the takeaways are kind of negative: …READ MORE

CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT: ECU Chancellor Talks C-USA Expansion Candidates/Mentions App St

ECU Chancellor Steve Ballard recently spoke with PirateRadio1250 about C-USA expansion and he mentioned App State quite a bit. Here are some of the important tidbits: …READ MORE

CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT: C-USA to Add UNCC & Old Dominion *UDPATED*

The Good News: It is more likely than ever that Appalachian State will make it to the Sun Belt now that 2 of the candidates are gone.

The Bad News: We have to listen to moronic UNCC fans brag about being in C-USA.

App’s football/athletic program/academics are all better than UNCC’s, but we aren’t a commuter school located in a large city so too bad. Hopefully we schedule UNCC in football very soon.

According to a report from CBS Sports:

Florida International, Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Texas San Antonio, Charlotte and Old Dominion will join C-USA giving the league 14 members. However, it’s not clear how soon after 2013 Charlotte, which is beginning its football program in 2013, and ODU, currently in the FCS, would be able to compete as a C-USA football member.

An official announcement could come as early as Friday, sources said.

C-USA and the Mountain West originally were going to merge into one league, but there were too many legal obstacles and that will no longer happen, sources said. Instead, C-USA will increase to 14 members and the Mountain West will be at 10 members by adding Utah State and San Jose State in 2013, CBSSports.com reported last week.

UPDATE

According to ESPN, Butler is moving to the A-10 from the Horizon League. Everyone saw this one coming though. VCU and George Mason to the A-10 is likely to be next. They’ll need 1 more on top of that though to get to an even number.

Butler will officially join the Atlantic 10 for the 2013-14 season Wednesday, a source with direct knowledge of the negotiation process told ESPN.com Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs will leave the Horizon League in all sports and join the A-10 after it formally seeks admission to the league. The A-10 will then accept the Bulldogs’ application to make it official.

Butler’s departure will crush the Horizon League. The Horizon League is left with lower-profile Midwestern schools in Cleveland State, Loyola (Ill.), Detroit, Illinois-Chicago, Green Bay, Milwaukee, Valparaiso, Wright State and Youngstown State.

Conference Realignment: ECU Chancellor Wants App St, UNCC & 4-Pod Conference

UPDATED: Thanks to HapApp in the comments for pointing out that in the actual video of the speech he DOES mention App St. In the transcript App St is not mentioned.

We can all respect ECU at least for the fact that they are the one FBS team in the state who isn’t afraid to play us on a regular basis (until we beat them this season). However, some of the comments ECU’s Chancellor Steve Ballard made in his annual “State of the University” address really caught my attention. The speech is making waves around the internet because he confirmed that the 4-pod approach is what CUSA/MWC is aiming for. However, it’s his  mention of App St & UNCC that matters to us. …READ MORE

Conference Realignment: Sun Belt Votes to Add Georgia State *Update: Or Maybe Not?*

According to CBS Sports, the current Sun Belt school Presidents have voted via teleconference to add Georgia State in all sports beginning in 2013.  They will be ineligible for league titles and bowl games until 2014, however. The official invitation is expected to be given on Thursday when Sun Belt Commissioner Karl Benson visits the campus. …READ MORE
