AUDIO: App State AD Charlie Cobb on ESPN730

(If the audio player above doesn’t load, click HERE)

Today Appalachian State’s AD Charlie Cobb appeared on Charlotte’s ESPN730. He talked about the decision to end Coach Moore’s tenure at App, the basketball program, and conference realignment.

Here are some of the highlights:

On what he’s looking for in a new head coach:

We want to find someone that’s got a connection to our community, to our school, and I think that’s really the first key. Understanding Appalachian and what this football program means to our campus and to our community.

Secondly you look for someone with some really strong leadership skills.

Third, for us the spread offense is part of what we do. That’s what our team is built around. We’re built around speed, we’re built around being aggressive and so I think if, and I know we will, we’ll find someone that fits those 3 primary characteristics, we’ll continue our success.

That’s basically just a description of Scott Satterfield. I’m bumping up the likelihood of us hiring him from 90% to 99%.

On joining an FBS conference that has geographic rivals:

It’s the #1 criteria for us. And that is joining a league that has geographic rivalries. Candidly we could be in an FCS, I’m sorry, an FBS league today that would involve schools all over America. That doesn’t make any sense whatsoever for Appalachian…

I’ve thought about this quote a lot. He is NOT referring to the Big East or C-USA cause we couldn’t be in the Big East and we actively pursued C-USA. The description of “all over America” doesn’t apply to the MAC or Sun Belt. So the ONLY conference I think he could be talked about was that supposed east coast WAC division that was rumored. That obviously fell through. But the fact that it was actually a real possibility that we turned down is a new revelation.

On basketball coach Jason Capel:

We’re a really young team, we went through a transition…right now we’re seeing that vacuum, or a little bit of a void, with having older players on our roster. Through another year of cycle, we’ll answer that question. We’re getting better every week and every game and I think that’s the exciting part of where our basketball program is.

AKA Capel is getting a pass this year.

NEWS: App State AD Charlie Cobb Was Considered For Clemson Job; GA Tech Candidate?

Well here we go again. Awhile back, App State’s athletic director, Charlie Cobb, was considered for the Southern Miss job. They ultimately went with someone from their own department.

Most recently, Clemson was looking for an AD. They ended up picking Dan Radakovich, stealing him away from Georgia Tech. But they CONSIDERED picking Charlie Cobb. It’s reported that there were 30 candidates thought of, but he was one of four finalists.

So now we know he’s on the short list of just about anyone looking for an AD. So who’s looking? Well, as I just mentioned, Georgia Tech just lost theirs. The Georgia Tech message boards are already mentioning Cobb’s name. Miami is also looking for one, although I haven’t seen anything about Cobb specifically mentioned in relation to that job.

I think Charlie Cobb has done a good job in everything but conference realignment positioning. But whether we like him or not, it seems like he may be gone before long.

Charlie Cobb spoke with Sirius XM radio earlier today about Appalachian State’s eventual FBS move (whenever that may be). Nothing extremely new here, but anytime Cobb breaks his silence on the subject it’s worth a mention. He doesn’t talk any specifics on conference affiliation, but he makes his case as to why App State should go FBS rather than stick around in the FCS.

“Many times those things (conference affiliation) get argued publicly where as you wish they were not, but you understand that’s the world we live in in athletics.”

CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT: App State AD Charlie Cobb Breaks Silence

Well by all accounts, it hasn’t been a particularly good week for App State. While schools with brand new football teams like UNCC, GA State, and UTSA have all made headlines as they jump to the FBS, perennial FCS power App State is making the cover of the Charlotte Observer – for a rape scandal.

What went wrong? Why haven’t these conferences picked us? Well we’ve all been talking about it for years now: Media Markets, Travel (perceptions), & Basketball.

I have no doubt that Charlie Cobb knew of these factors. But what could he really do about them? We can’t move the campus to Charlotte – but we can talk about how many of our Alumni live there. We can’t make ourselves a basketball power overnight – but we can talk about our football and baseball programs. And we can address the perception that Boone is isolated and hard to get to. Cobb is now talking about that, saying: …READ MORE

Athletic Director Saga Gets Interesting: Cobb’s Competitor Wrapped in Scandal

So if you’ve been living under a rock: Southern Miss is looking for an AD and they’ve narrowed it down to 2 finalists, App State’s AD Charlie Cobb & current USM interim AD Jeff Hammond.

Well it looks like Charlie Cobb’s stock may be rising. Jeff Hammond, former Army Major General, has now had a 2nd complaint filed against him and the University with the EEOC. Two female associate AD’s have resigned. The newest accuser alleges that Hammond verbally abused and bullied her to the point where she had to quit. In the original case, the accuser says she was passed over for the interim AD position despite having 25 years of experience. …READ MORE

AD Charlie Cobb: 1 of 2 Finalists for So. Miss Job, Decision by Weeks End

According to an exclusive report from WDAM, the rumor we reported earlier in the week that 5 candidates were interviewed in Dallas over the weekend was in fact true (and Charlie Cobb was one of them). Going into the interviews, reports said that App State AD Charlie Cobb was the lead candidate for the same job at So. Miss.

This report states that coming out of the interviews he is one of 2 lead candidates, the other being current interim So. Miss AD Jeff Hammond. The report also states that the decision could be made by the end of the week. The need to hire a new basketball coach is apparently speeding up the AD hiring process. No offense Charlie but I hope Hammond gets the job!
