PARDON OUR PROGRESS: Site Moving/Upgrading

I just want to give you guys a quick update on the site. In the next 2 weeks or so, there won’t be many articles posted since I am hard at work moving the site to a new location. It will be completely redesigned, have TONS of new features, and I’m even bringing on a couple of new writers. The new site will basically be a completely new entity and will even have a new name.

So please bear with me during this transition period and thanks again for your support!

(In other news: Did you see what our amazing baseball team did last night?)

FACILITY UPGRADES: App State Announces Strategic Plan

appstatestadiumenhancements

Appalachian State announced its new strategic plan today. You can view the full plan HERE.

In case you’re too lazy to read it, here are some of the highlights:

*Planned Facility Enhancements (Just the highlights)

  • Football – Add premium seating and general seating
  • Track & Field/Field Hockey – Permanent facilities
  • Basketball – Establish an alternate practice location for basketball
  • Basketball – Construct a weight room in the Holmes Center
  • Baseball - Expand stadium seating to include all chair-back seating
  • Baseball - On-site weight room
  • Softball - Construct an indoor hitting facility
  • Tennis - Develop indoor facility
  • Soccer – Possibly build new on-campus facility
  • Golf - Develop a driving range/short game practice area

Does this mean we are finally getting rid of the track around the football stadium? It didn’t spell that out, but it did say we were finding a new home for the track. If so, this is the facility enhancement I’m most looking forward to.

*Secondary reference is now “App State” not “ASU”

Thank goodness. As much as we would like to think we own “ASU” everyone immediately thinks of Arizona State. App State is our brand and personally I like it better anyway.

*Change the official website from GoASU.com to AppStateSports.com

I never did like GoASU as a name. Definitely an improvement.

*Cheerleading & Band Travel No Longer Funded with “Athletics” Money

I don’t really care how they’re funded, as long as they’re funded. If it means that more money is available for other athletics stuff, and cheerleading & band travel still get their money from somewhere, it sounds good to me.

*The slogan “No Equal” is no more.

It was getting old anyway. “Always Attack” anyone?

Overall, I think it’s an excellent plan. But I would make building a new track, and removing/covering up the old one, priority #1.

EXCLUSIVE: FOIA Request Reveals Possible Sun Belt Expansion Plan

envelope

Two weeks ago, I personally filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with both Appalachian State and Georgia Southern regarding any documents they had pertaining to conference realignment.

Today, Georgia Southern sent me the documents I asked for. There are roughly 50 pages in all. Some of them are common press releases, others unexciting emails. There are a few, however, that were VERY interesting. None more interesting than the 2 pages I am about to show you.

This is an email dated Dec 22, 2012 @ 10:21 AM. I actually have this email multiple times at various stages of the “forwarding” process. I chose the one with the least amount of “Confidentiality” statements.

There are emails leading up to this where Karl Benson and new Georgia Southern AD Tom Kleinlein arrange meetings. This one is obviously a follow up to one of those meetings. The email itself isn’t what struck me. It’s the amount of talk about how the attachment was “confidential” (especially at later stages in the forwarding process) and of course the attachment itself:

FOIAEmail1

FOIAEmail2

The map shows the locations of every Sun Belt school…except that Appalachian State and Georgia Southern are added!

Is this a working plan for how the conference will look very soon? Is this just a mockup that they are using to throw around ideas? I honestly have no idea. But they went through great lengths to ensure everyone who read the email knew it was “confidential”. I guess they forgot about us pesky sports bloggers and our annoying FOIA requests.

That’s all for now. I’ll be releasing more documents from this FOIA request in the weeks to come. Some of them involve the MAC, others involve NMSU. Also I’m still waiting on Appalachian State to reply to its request, so stay tuned!

REPORT: Wofford Defensive Coordinator to App State…Or Not? *UPDATED*

natewoody

According to an article in the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, Wofford defensive coordinator Nate Woody is expected to take the same position at Appalachian State.

It looks to be a great hire:

…under Woody, [Wofford] led the Southern Conference in scoring defense (16.6 points per game), total defense (305 yards per game) and rushing defense (125 yards per game). The Terriers ranked ninth nationally in total defense and seventh in scoring defense.

According to his official bio, he was a 4-year starter at Wofford and has been a coach there for 22 years. It’s got to be tough for him to give that up. That is…IF he gives it up.

Wofford’s beat writer, who wrote the original article, is now making it sound like the move is more in question, and that another Wofford coach may be departing:

Wofford defensive coordinator Nate Woody drove from out of state today to talk to coach Mike Ayers about offer from Appalachian State …
@TerrierTracker
Todd Shanesy

… But Ayers said they agreed to talk more this weekend. “It’s kind of on hold a little bit. … He’s got some things going through his mind.”
@TerrierTracker
Todd Shanesy

… Ayers said another team made offer to defensive assistant Jack Teachey, but “I think he feels that his best situation is here at Wofford.”
@TerrierTracker
Todd Shanesy

Don’t pop the champagne yet, but I hope we get him.

UPDATE

The Spartanburg Herald-Journal has put up a new article. It reiterates what was said on Twitter yesterday. He is waiting until Sunday to make up his mind. As for the other Wofford coach, it was Western Carolina trying to steal him away (but failed).

UPDATE X2

The Spartanburg Herald-Journal has a new blog post up that doesn’t say much new, but explains the mixed messages they are getting from Nate Woody.

APP STATE BASEBALL: 2013 Schedule Released / RPI Analysis

baseball

Following the best season in Appalachian State baseball history, our boys have their work cut out for them. This year we’re sporting a new head coach, Billy Jones. But we lost a ton of players to the pros.

Here’s a look at the schedule released today, I added each team’s RPI from last season. App State finished #33, although with our coaching change and personnel losses that may be unrealistic this year.

NEWS: Satterfield Confirmed to be Next HC / Big East Splits

satterfield2

I had a source tell me a couple of days ago that Scott Satterfield, current Asst Coach/Offensive Coordinator here at App, would be named the next Head Coach. It turns out that the source was good. The Winston-Salem Journal confirmed the news earlier today.

Obviously none of this should surprise anyone following the situation. He was likely always going to get the job, despite a supposed “national search”, and you know what, I’m OK with that. I love his resume and I love his close ties to App even more. I’m hoping that will be enough to keep him at App for a long time. Here’s a quick timeline of his career:

2012-Present Head Coach Appalachian State
2012 Assistant Head Coach & Offensive Coordinator Appalachian State
2010-2011 Offensive Coordinator Florida International
2009 Passing Game Coordinator & Quarterback Coach Toledo
2003-2008 Quarterback Coach Appalachian State
1999-2002 Running Backs Coach Appalachian State
1998 Wide Receivers Coach Appalachian State
1992-1995 Quarterback Appalachian State

Big-East-Logo

The coaching search coming to an end wasn’t the only big news of the day. In conference realignment land, 7 of the Big East’s “basketball-only” schools are preparing to go their separate way.

Teams That Are Leaving the Big East

Villanova
Georgetown
St. John’s
Marquette
Providence
Seton Hall
DePaul

Teams That Are Getting Left Behind
UConn
Cincinnati
Houston
Southern Methodist
Central Florida
South Florida
Memphis
Temple
Tulane
Boise State (Football Only)
San Diego State (Football Only)
Navy (Football Only)
ECU (Football Only)

Honestly, the only difference is that now this mediocre football conference will also be mediocre in basketball. As it stands, it’s still a superior conference compared to C-USA/Sun-Belt/MAC. The question is, will some of these teams get scared of all this instability and leave? If not, they are fine. But Boise State, San Diego State, Houston, and SMU are ALL threats to leave for the MWC. UConn and Cincinnati are still longshot threats to leave for the Big-12 or ACC. Navy is a threat for go back to being an independent. ECU will probably want an all-sports invite now.

If any of that happens, expect the trickle down effect to reach C-USA and eventually the Sun Belt. If they stick together, the trickle down could actually come from the basketball schools that are leaving. If they end up forming their own conference, rather than join the A-10, many of the A-10 schools might be wooed away. Then the A-10 will take some of the basketball-only schools from the CAA, and then the CAA will come knocking again for some SoCon schools. All of this will eventually affect App State somehow. It will just take some time to see the aftershocks form.

SOURCE: Scott Satterfield to be Announced As Next Head Coach at App State *CONFIRMED*

Before I begin, this is a blog, not the New York Times. I don’t have editors, fact-checkers, confirmed sources, or any of that. If any newspaper wants to quote this blog as a source (it’s happened), let me know so I can stop reading your newspaper.

That being said, according to one main source and a combination of other less specific sources (sounds legit!), Scott Satterfield will be our next head coach. To give you word for word what my main source says:

…the decision has been made. It’s Satterfield. The plan is to announce after he returns from the Shrine Bowl.

After the Shrine Bowl you say? Well that part makes sense, since he definitely is/was at the Shrine Bowl (@WinTheGame = Scott Satterfield):

Headed to Shrine Bowl practice. Excited to see some great players! Can’t believe it’s been so long since I played in this game! Great week!

Rise & grind #AppNation! Excited to get out & see some future mountaineers w @ & @ #AlwaysAttack #AppStateFootball

Coach Justin Stepp

Other sources, including App State’s student radio show, have said that the new coach will be announced this week and that Scott Satterfield was interviewed this past weekend:

Sources tell us that the new head football coach at #AppState could be named as early as tomorrow or as late as Friday.
@SOTW_Radio
Sports Out The WASU

#AppState RT @: told Scott Satterfield “interviews” this weekend. Goes well it’s his.

It’s not official until it’s official. Don’t shoot the messenger if this ends up being wrong, I’m just passing along what I hear. But everything, and I mean everything, is pointing to an announcement that Scott Satterfield will be our next head coach.

In other news, two emails from AD Charlie Cobb to Coach Moore and Chancellor Peacock, regarding Moore’s forced retirement, were obtained by a newspaper via FOIA request. Interesting to say the least.

UPDATE

This story has been CONFIRMED by the Winston-Salem Journal. Coach Satterfield will be announced as the new head coach tomorrow.

INTERVIEW: Charles Haynes Founder of 2011 App State Tailgate of the Year “Big C’s Tailgate”

The official 2012 App State Tailgate of the Year voting has begun. (Vote HERE) The polls will close on Wed Nov 7, when the winner will be announced.

So I thought this would be a great opportunity to interview Charles Haynes and ask him about what it takes to be a top-level tailgate. He runs Big C’s Tailgate and is pretty famous in the App State community. His tailgate has won multiple awards, including last year’s top prize. Not to mention he also runs the App State blog BigCTailgate.com.

“Big C’s Tailgate” Overall Awards:

2006 Tailgate of the Year

2011 Tailgate of the Year

5x Tailgate of the Game (Including this year’s Coastal Carolina game)

2012 Tailgate of the Year Finalist (Make sure to give him a vote)

So without further ado, let’s get to the interview:

Charles, what is it that separates your tailgate from the average Joe, and even other big time tailgates?

I think one of the best parts about our tailgate is how many Appalachian alums we have from different generations. We have graduates from the 70′s, up through the 2000′s and even some future graduates. Having so many people that have seen Appalachian grow helps everyone appreciate the school for different reasons. I also think we serve some of the best food you will find. From jumbalaya, to fried turkeys, baby back ribs, pork shoulder, shrimp & grits, etc. If you can think of it, we have probably cooked it.

Have you ever tailgated for an App event that wasn’t a football game?

Of course! Any time the opportunity arises to enjoy Appalachian sporting events with a little tailgating, we always try to take advantage. Behind football games, baseball can be really fun to tailgate for in the spring.

How many years have you been putting on this tailgate and how many people usually show up?

It started in college, and just grew from there. We had maybe a dozen people when I was a senior at App in 2002 and its gradually grown from there to as many as a hundred people for big games like Homecoming. We imagined how great it would be for the Raley Lot to be full of tailgaters so we started parking there, long before a Yosef donation was required to park there. It has been neat to see the excitement and atmosphere of tailgating grow in the past ten years.

Out of all of your tailgates, what game/event sticks out in your mind as the most memorable?

There are a lot of memorable tailgates. Halloween in 2008 was awesome for several reasons. Tailgating for a night game is always more fun, and combined with the holiday, it made for a great night. We had a projector and used a screen and brought out the Xbox while some people played Rock Band when it started getting dark. The Western Illinois playoff game also stands out in 2010. It snowed a good four inches before the noon kickoff, so that made for a very interesting tailgate. All of the national championship tailgates also hold a spot in heart. They were all special in their own way.

Besides the actual tailgate, you also run BigCTailgate.com an App State blog famous for its game previews. What kind of grade would you give this year’s football team? Do you think we have a chance to make a run in the playoffs if we get there?

If I had to give us a grade.. it would be a B-. There was a lot of coaching turnover and it can take some time for a staff to gel. It is amazing how one game, The Citadel loss, can have an impact on the season. If we won that game, I may feel totally different. This is a young but talented team, that has had some injuries that are hard to overcome at this level of football. If we make the playoffs, our success will depend entirely on our bracket and the matchups. If we end up 7-4, we will probably host a first round game, but that would mean travelling to a seed in the next round. At 8-3 we are probably travelling in the third round, but it might be a better matchup.

Do you have any high hopes for this year’s hoops squad?

I have extremely high hopes for the Womens’ team. I think they could possibly be better than they were last year, depending on the maturation of a couple of freshman. We got bigger inside and will allow us to matchup better with certain teams. We have plenty of veterans on the team and this is their last chance to get to the NCAA tournament. I think this is their year.

Oh, you meant the Mens’ team?!?!? Kidding aside. There are a lot of new faces on the team and it is going be rough the first couple of months before they figure each other out. There is enough talent on the team, but we will need some production from the bench and that is where there are a lot of unknowns. I think they can contend for SoCon Tourney first round bye because the North Division is very competitive. It is a team that will get better as the season goes on.

Thanks to Charles Haynes for taking some time out to do the interview! Don’t forget to VOTE for him as this year’s 2012 Tailgate of the Year!

WEEK 4 @ Chattanooga: or How Yosef Got His Groove Back

So far this season I’ve done the remixed ECU logo, the Yosef/Montana Grizzly Bear fight to the death, and the Citadel Doormat (shortly followed by an MIB memory wipe). This week, I did a remix of the classic Academy Award Eligible film How Stella Got Her Groove Back.

Considering how awful my prediction was last week, I almost didn’t want to do this article. Then I remembered that everyone was wrong last week. Hell I’m sure even The Citadel didn’t predict the beat down that took place. So until we play this week’s game we need something to talk about, here’s a prediction:

OVERVIEW

Chattanooga has 0 Div-I wins this season. Sure they beat D-II Glenville State last week, but that doesn’t count towards the minimum needed for playoff eligibility. (Why even schedule those games?) First they lost big to USF and then lost by 3 to a ranked Jacksonville State team.

Chattanooga isn’t a great team but they’re dangerous. The last couple of times we have played them, we won by the skin of our teeth. This time we face them IN Chattanooga for their HOMECOMING GAME. This could very well be the largest home attendance they have all year, so the home field advantage will likely be a big factor. We won’t be intimidated, but they will be extra motivated.

CHATTANOOGA’S OFFENSE

Chattanooga is in their second year of running what they call the “pro spread” offense. Their offensive coordinator, Marcus Satterfield, was quoted during the preseason as saying

“I think now we know there’s a rhyme or reason for what we’re doing. Last year I can’t promise you we had any rhyme or reason for what we did other than, hey, that looks like it would be fun, let’s try that.”

I hope he was joking. Anyway, expect to see a mobile quarterback with some keepers, and a lot of runs to the outside. I can guarantee you they will try to adapt The Citadel’s gameplan against us for their offense. The good news is Chattanooga ranks last in the SoCon for scoring offense and second to last in total offense. You could chalk that up to a lack of big plays. The bad news is we just flat out suck defensively on 3rd down. We can’t let them grind out big drives. I sure hope we made some defensive adjustments in practice this week.

CHATTANOOGA’S DEFENSE

This is their bread and butter. Last week they held Glenville State scoreless. If that doesn’t impress you (and it shouldn’t) they are ranked 12th in the COUNTRY in total defense. That’s good for 2nd best in the SoCon behind GA Southern. They’re also 23rd in the country for turnover margin, not too shabby. That matches up their strength against our strength, our offense. We’re ranked 28th in the country in total offense. Last week we struggled offensively in the first half but other than that we have been fine. Obviously our ability to score will be key.

Conclusion

This is going to be a really tough game. I’m hoping that we just didn’t matchup well against The Citadel. I’m going to say that the team that showed up against Montana is the one that will show up in Chattanooga. Our defense should be very familiar with defending the spread. Likewise, their defense should be very familiar with it as well. The keys to this game will be our defense on 3rd downs and not committing turnovers on offense. I can’t guarantee a win, but I wouldn’t pick against us.

Prediction

#17 Appalachian State – 27 / Chattanooga – 24
