PARDON OUR PROGRESS: Site Moving/Upgrading

I just want to give you guys a quick update on the site. In the next 2 weeks or so, there won’t be many articles posted since I am hard at work moving the site to a new location. It will be completely redesigned, have TONS of new features, and I’m even bringing on a couple of new writers. The new site will basically be a completely new entity and will even have a new name.

So please bear with me during this transition period and thanks again for your support!

(In other news: Did you see what our amazing baseball team did last night?)

APP STATE BASEBALL: 2013 Schedule Released / RPI Analysis

baseball

Following the best season in Appalachian State baseball history, our boys have their work cut out for them. This year we’re sporting a new head coach, Billy Jones. But we lost a ton of players to the pros.

Here’s a look at the schedule released today, I added each team’s RPI from last season. App State finished #33, although with our coaching change and personnel losses that may be unrealistic this year.

VIDEO: Appalachian State Baseball Hype

We don’t have the baseball schedule yet, but NC State has us listed as their first series of the season. AWESOME.

App State Athletics Report Card: A Quick Look at the OTHER Sports

App State is a football school, no one can deny that. But there’s no reason we can’t be just as successful in our other sports. Let’s take a look at how we are doing this season in every sport (besides football):

Men’s Cross Country

GRADE: A

SUMMARY: They’ve already won the 2012 SoCon Championship. Next up they have the Three Stripe Invitational on Nov 3rd followed by the NCAA Southeast Regional. There they will have a chance to improve their A to an A+.

Women’s Cross Country

GRADE: A

SUMMARY:  Just like the men’s team, our women are the 2012 SoCon champs! They also beat 30 other teams to win the Winthrop invite earlier this year. Look for them to make some noise at the NCAA Southeast Regional.

Men’s Golf

GRADE: C

SUMMARY: After finishing 6th in the SoCon last year, there is definitely some room for improvement for the program. But at the same time it could be worse. The tournament isn’t until April so they have some time to get better. They’ve finished in the top-4 at two of their four tournaments this season. But in the other two they finished 10th and 12th respectively. Josh Nichols had a top-5 individual finish at their most recent outing which is good to see. If the team needs someone to come out and show them what NOT to do, I’ll be happy to come down and volunteer.

Women’s Golf

GRADE: B

SUMMARY: They finished 5th (out of 10) in the SoCon last season. They are basically at the same level as our men, with one exception. This year they won the Winthrop Invitational, whereas last year they placed 4th in that tourney. So they are definitely on their way up. Their other results weren’t as impressive, but they’ve at least shown some big potential.

Men’s Tennis

GRADE: TBD, expect B

SUMMARY: They had a great season last year, but fell in the 2nd round of the SoCon tourney. This year they have only done 2 tournaments, with some mixed results. It’s still way to early to tell.

Women’s Tennis

GRADE: TBD, expect A

SUMMARY: I think this might be their year. They had a great start to the season, finishing no lower than 3rd in any event in their first tournament. Last year was pretty good, but they fell hard in the 2nd round of the tournament. Let’s see if they can put it all together.

Volleyball

GRADE: F

SUMMARY: There are 4 more games left in the season, and to be honest it can’t come fast enough. After a 21-11 (12-4 SoCon) run last year, our ladies are 6-20 (2-10 SoCon). To make things worse, most of our losses weren’t even close. 13 of our 20 losses were 3-0 sweeps. I’m sure it’s not for a lack of trying. I actually took volleyball class back in college and the entire volleyball team was in the class with me. I had a newfound respect for female athletes after that. These girls work hard. But if you take a test and you get a 23% on it, that’s an F no matter what class you’re in. A surprise finish in the SoCon tournament could do a lot to make amends though. I think the coaches will get a mulligan this year, but if next year is just as bad or worse, the heat could turn up.

Field Hockey

GRADE: F

SUMMARY: They finished the regular season 3-15. Last year they finished 2-17-1 so there isn’t much progress occurring either. I’m sure our girls are giving their best as always, but it’s not being reflected in the W/L column. They still have a chance for some redemption in the NorPac Conference tournament on Nov 1. But overall, I would have to think this coaching staff might be in the hot seat just due to the consistent lack of results.

Men’s Soccer

GRADE: C

SUMMARY: The team finished the regular season 7-7-3 (2-3-2 SoCon). That’s a small step down from last year’s breakout 10-win season. They still have time to bring up the grade in the SoCon tournament though.

Women’s Soccer

GRADE: B

SUMMARY: The ladies had a great season, maybe even their best ever, but it ended today unfortunately. They lost to Elon in their first game of the SoCon tournament today. They finished 10-8-1 (7-3-1 SoCon). That was a decent step up from last year’s 6 win season. Next year could seriously be a breakout season.

Women’s Basketball

GRADE: TBD, expect A+

SUMMARY: So far they’ve only played an exhibition game. They won that easily, 77-43, against Mars Hill. They are picked to finished 1st in the SoCon by the media and 2nd by the SoCon coaches (behind Davidson). After the best season in school history, I have high hopes for this team. An NCAA birth would be enough for an A+ in my book. Honestly, I’m not sure how head coach Darcie Vincent hasn’t been stolen away by an ACC school yet.

Sports that haven’t started play yet:

Men’s Basketball – Nov 2

I hope I’m wrong, but I expect a rocky season with such an extremely young team.

Wrestling – Nov 4

After the best finish in school history, I can’t wait to see if we can keep it up this year.

Men’s Track & Field – Nov 30

After last year’s SoCon championship, I expect nothing but good things here.

Women’s Track & Field – Nov 30

Just like the men, they’re coming off a SoCon championship and I’m looking for them to repeat.

Baseball – No schedule

Just like wrestling and women’s basketball, baseball had its best season ever last year. But a coaching change, and a lot of players moving up to the pros, could slow things down for a year or two. I hope they prove me wrong! I’ll be watching this one closely.

Softball – No schedule

They were 22-27 last year. But they beat USC 1-0 in their fall schedule this year, so I’m expecting some big improvement. Breakout season?

Dear Appalachian State Freshmen: Time to Burn Your Tarheel/Duke Shirts

I saw this picture floating around Twitter and it makes an excellent point.

When I started school back in 2003, App State didn’t have any football championships. We hadn’t blocked any field goals at Michigan yet. It was still an awesome school, with a solid athletics program. But it was overshadowed by the UNC’S, Duke’s, Wake Forest’s, and even NCSUs of the world. Unfortunately, a lot of people walked around campus wearing Carolina blue. Some didn’t even know we had a team.

Well a lot changed right after that. We won 3 straight national championships and beat #5 Michigan. The number of freshman applicants in 2003 was 9,598. By 2011, that number had spiked to 12,959. Our acceptance standards have also spiked to be among the most difficult in the state. Hell, if I tried to apply to Appalachian State today, I wouldn’t get in.

Now we have started a nursing school, making a commitment to health sciences. Professors and students from those other NC schools come to us for leadership in the area of sustainability, as highlighted by our energy summit and award-winning solar homestead which garnered national attention.

THE POINT IS: I don’t have to tell seniors, juniors, sophomores, or alumni to take off their UNC/Duke shirts. They burned those a long time ago. Boone is absolutely dominated by Appalachian State. No one gives two shits about whatever a Tarheel is anymore.

I’m talking to YOU freshmen. Yeah your dad raised you as a Longhorn fan, or a Gamecock fan, or a Tarheel, whatever. That’s nice when you’re a kid. But now you’re a student at Appalachian State University. A lot of people wanted to go here and didn’t get in. You’re one of the lucky few, you earned it.

Any bandwagon fan can like Tarheel basketball or Alabama football just by going to Wal-Mart and buying a T-Shirt. But it’s a little more special to be an Appalachian State fan. You have a chance to be a member of a close-knit family of hardcore Mountaineers that just absolutely bleed Black & Gold.

Time to start cheering for a team you can feel good about…the one you go to.

REPORT: Appalachian State to Name Former OSU Assistant Billy Jones as Head Baseball Coach

It isn’t official yet, but according to a report from College Baseball Daily, Appalachian State will name former Oklahoma State Assistant Coach Billy Jones as the next head baseball coach.

According to his official profile, he’s an Oregon State alum but played baseball at Lower Columbia Community College before transferring to Southwest Texas State.

His coaching career started as head coach of Green River (Wash.) Community College where he won a regional championship. After that he was an assistant for 2 years at Oregon State, followed by 2 years at Arizona State.

The highlight of his career so far might have been his 3 year stint as an assistant coach at NC State where he was an assistant coach of the year finalist. He’s spent the last 8 years at Oklahoma State where he has helped turn them into an offensive powerhouse and also served as recruiting coordinator. However, his boss got the axe which has left him looking for a job.

I like the fact that he’s been a recruiting coordinator in North Carolina before so it’s not like he’s unfamiliar with the area. Additionally, he’s coached at big time programs from major conferences.

I don’t like that he has no real ties to App State, but that’s not a deal breaker. All in all, for the money we were likely offering (still TBD) he seems like a solid pick and in 2 or 3 years we should be competing for conference championships. IF this report is true. With all the bogus reports we’ve seen lately I won’t believe it until I hear it out of Charlie Cobb’s mouth. But for now, I’m cautiously optimistic.

UPDATE: Confirmed by GoASU

VIDEO: 2012 App State Baseball Season Review – Players Perspective

Awesome video. It kind of makes you feel like you were on the team for the wild ride this year.

Unfortunately, all the shots of Coach Pollard just remind me that we don’t have a head baseball coach right now. I hope Charlie Cobb remedies that soon.

BASEBALL: Appalachian State’s Coach Pollard Joins Duke

Coach Pollard became the head coach for the Duke Blue Devils today. I hate to say it, but I think most of us saw this coming. We had the best season in school history, and most of our best players went pro. Next year was going to be a rebuilding year, even with Coach Pollard. So like they say in Vegas, quit while you’re ahead.

I wish him all the best. He took us to new heights and left us better than he found us. I’m sure he’s getting a big raise, and is going to the ACC, which is a power baseball conference even if they still basically suck at football.

Funny enough, Coach Pollard’s App State team …READ MORE

Voice of the Mountaineers, David Jackson, was a guest on ESPN730 yesterday. Speaking of which, that radio station has been showing App State a lot of love lately. They had Charles Arbuckle on RECENTLY talking App State and ECU’s AD mostly fielding questions about App State.

David Jackson, who for my money is the best radio guy in the business, spoke about App State’s magical baseball run, the upcoming football season, and perhaps most interestingly, conference realignment: …READ MORE
