WEEK 2: The OTHER Games App State Fans Should Watch

Well in Week 1 I went 9-1 in my predictions (screwing up the one that mattered). Let’s see if I can continue the overall streak with week 2 games.

Although I call this segment the other games to “watch” I don’t actually recommend you watch all of these. I include them because they involve teams that App will play later on in the season, and seeing how they do will let us know a little about what to expect when we face them. So here we go:

Saturday, Sept 8

12:21 PM ECU @ FBS #9 South Carolina

Although we’re done with ECU for the season, how they do against a top-10 team might give us a hint as to where we’re really at. If ECU were to somehow upset USC, our loss against them doesn’t look half bad. If ECU get’s blown out on the other hand, it won’t give us too great of a feeling. South Carolina looked very beatable in their first game against Vanderbilt, winning only 17-13. That doesn’t mean ECU is the one to beat em though.

Prediction: ECU 10 / South Carolina 31

5:00 PM Coastal Carolina @ Furman

This is one of the more interesting games of the week. We have to play both of these teams later on in the season. Just for our conference’s reputation we should be rooting for Furple. But in my visit to Coastal Carolina I had an amazing time and deep in my heart I’ll be rooting for them. Coastal Carolina beat a weak NC A&T team 28-13 in week 1, while Furman lost @ Samford in a close one 21-24. It will be interesting to see how Furman comes back after such a heartbreaking opener for them.

Prediction: Coastal Carolina 20 / Furman 26

6:00 PM #3 Georgia Southern @ The Citadel

I will be rooting for The Citadel 110% in this one. Sure that would ruin a lot of the hype for when we play GA Southern, but I’d like to see them lose a few early to get some insurance. Unfortunately The Citadel struggled early on in their game last week against a very weak Charleston Southern team. That doesn’t bode well for them, considering

Georgia Southern blew out Jacksonville 58 – 0 without even getting a single passing yard. On the other hand, not getting a single passing yard could be a bad sign for Georgia Southern, if The Citadel can stop the run. Oh who am I kidding…

Prediction: Georgia Southern 39 / The Citadel 14

7:00 PM Chattanooga @ #24 Jacksonville State

Chattanooga has been through a roller coaster week. First their QB quit the team without giving a reason, but one has to guess it was the QB competition against the Coach’s son. Then he changed his mind and now he’s back. That’s a lot of distraction when they’re about to face a top-25 team on the road. Last week they lost to South Florida 13-34 but that doesn’t really tell us how good they are. It’s the same story with Jacksonville State who lost to Arkansas 24-49, that result doesn’t tell us anything. I’m thinking with the home field advantage and all of the distraction on Chattanooga’s side that Jacksonville State gets a W. I’ll be rooting for Chatty though.

Prediction: Chattanooga 29 / Jacksonville State 35

7:00 PM Western Carolina @ Marshall

Western Carolina got a rare W last week against Div-II Mars Hill. This week they are going to get one of those not-so-rare L’s against Marshall. Even though Marshall got blown out by West Virginia last week, this is Western Carolina we’re talking about. It would take an act of God for WCU to win this game and I’m pretty sure he’s got better things to do.

Prediction: Western Carolina 14 / Marshall 42

7:00 PM NC Central @ Elon

Talk about a snoozefest. Elon didn’t manage to score a single point against UNC. NC Central was able to beat Div-II Fayetteville State, but I wasn’t able to care. Usually I would go with Elon here, but after last week…I’m thinking they might just be that bad.

Prediction: NC Central 41 / Elon 31

7:00 PM West Alabama @ Samford

Samford started off strong, beating Furman at home and taking an early lead in the SoCon standings. This week they face Div-II West Alabama, although as Div-II teams go this is one of the better ones. They are currently ranked #8 & #13 in the Div-II polls. They beat Clark Atlanta 44-0, but that might be more impressive if I knew that school existed before just now. West Alabama might hang in there early, but frankly the gap between FCS and Div-II is bigger than the one between FBS and FCS. Samford should definitely win this.

Prediction: West Alabama 17 / Samford 34

7:00 PM Lincoln (PA) @ #10 Wofford

Last week Div-II Lincoln (PA) lost to Cheyney University of Pennsylvania 21-34. Need I say more.

Prediction: Lincoln (PA) 3 / Wofford 61
