App State News Roundup: Bears Sign Legree, A 2nd App Alum is an NFL Cheerleader, & WAC Drops Football

There were a couple of interesting stories that popped up around the web today.

Bears Sign Mark LeGree

According to ESPN, former App State Safety Mark LeGree has been picked up by the Chicago Bears. Although the article says he spent time on 3 different NFL teams in his rookie year (Cardinals, Jets, 49rs), they didn’t mention that he was originally drafted by the Seahawks. He was an all-state (GA) player in high school and a 3 time All-American at App.

A 2nd App Alum is an NFL Cheerleader

You heard it HERE first that App State’s elite dance team captain was now a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader. Well now the excellent App State blog Big C’s Tailgate is REPORTING that former App State elite dance team member Maegan Eichinger is now a Carolina Panthers Top Cat! HERE is her official photo gallery. Congrats Maegan!

WAC Drops Football

This should come as no surprise to those who have followed the situation. According to the Denver Post, WAC commissioner Jeff Hurd said:

“I think that sometime in late July it became apparent that it was unlikely we could continue with football,” Hurd said. “We looked at every option we could think of. With the geography we have in terms of schools, it presents a challenge.”

Idaho and NMSU have both now said that they will play independent FBS football in 2013. Putting together a schedule will be difficult for both of them. Idaho is very likely to make a move to the Big Sky official for their other sports. Now the future of the WAC, even as a non-football conference, is in question. However, their basketball autobid should make them attractive enough to somebody. Probably not anyone you have ever heard of. In any case, all those rumors of an east coast WAC football conference with App State joining can officially end today.
