5’9″ 177lb WR Tacoi Sumler, a 4-star recruit according to Rivals, is transferring from Oregon to Appalachian State according to tweets from his and QB Jamal Jackson’s twitter accounts.
He’s a redshirt freshman who still has a full 4-years of eligibility left with App State. He was a high school All-American, putting up 994 yds & 17 TDs for Christopher Columbus High School. He caught 3 passes for 15 yds in Oregon’s Spring Game.
Why did he transfer? Well frankly Oregon is just plain stacked and ridiculously good players sit on the bench at schools like that. According to Oregon coach Chip Kelly:
“He came in and we had a good conversation,” Kelly said. “He’d like to get back a little bit closer to home. He’s going to drop down a division and look at some I-AA schools. We told him we would help him in any way we can.”
“I think kids want to go to college where they want to play,” Kelly said. “I think he was real honest. He’d like to go to a I-AA school to play. And that’s going to happen. Not everybody can play. When you have 85 kids on scholarship, we’re only allowed to travel 70 so at some point in time some kids, they have to understand their role. I think it happens at a lot of places where, ‘If I’m not going to be playing maybe I should go someplace else.”
Their loss is our gain! Check out his high school highlight video and the tweets that broke the news:
