CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT: College of Charleston May Leave SoCon Within 2 Months

According to multiple sources, including the Charleston Post & Courier, College of Charleston’s Board of Directors met today to discuss leaving the SoCon for the CAA.

The CAA “has been in contact with the College of Charleston about the College’s potential interest in joining the league,” committee chairman Dwight Johnson said in a statement. “No formal invitation has been extended by the CAA at this time.”

A recommendation will be provided by their next meeting on Aug 3.

Jeff Hartsell, the author of that Charleston Post & Courier article, then tweeted the following:

#CofC prez George Benson says decision on leaving #SoCon for #CAA could come “within next month or two months”

After talking to #CofC prez and AD, my impression: They lean toward #CAA, need to jump thru hoops, convince BOT members to get there #socon

#cofc ad hull says #caa perceived as generally above #socon, better tv exposure. Travel cost, missed classtime major concern. #socon

ABC 4 News in Charleston also had some nuggets of info that somewhat contradicted that 2 month timeline:

“The level of television exposure for the Colonial, just looking at men’s basketball, the Colonial gets dramatically more exposure than the Southern Conference does,” said AD Joe Jull

“There is no timeline,” he said. “The board will do their due diligence and take the proper amount of time that it takes to make the right decision. …I’d be surprised if we make a decision by the board meeting in a few weeks.”

I think it’s only a matter of time before CoC takes off for the CAA. That could be enough to push Davidson over the edge to go ahead and join.

It’s also been rumored that UAlbany will announce a move soon. Stony Brook is also being strongly considered.

A proposed CAA would look something like this:

A huge blow to SoCon basketball if both Davidson and CoC left. Hope the SoCon poaches the best from Big South and OVC: Coastal, Liberty, Jax St., and Tennessee Tech.

Heck even aim so high as to go after JMU and W&M

    Eastern Kentucky maybe.

I think Coastal Carolina is the best available. The tricky thing is we will probably be losing basketball only schools and obviously Coastal Carolina is a football school. If only CoC leaves that doesn’t really work well as a plugin fix.

If Davidson leaves too, then we could add 2 football schools and just have a bigger football conference. In that case I would like to see TN Tech or perhaps Kennesaw State.

If just CoC leaves I’d still like to see the above, but then add somebody like Winthrop to plug the basketball only hole.

I’m betting if they lose the two BBall schools then they’ll grab two all-sport schools. Because they’ll try to protect their FB conference when/if AppSt. and GaSo do bounce out then they’ll be back at least to the current number.

That would be the smart thing to do.
