*UPDATED* CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT: Appalachian State AD Charlie Cobb Gives An Update

Thanks to HapApp for the heads-up on this! The Winston-Salem Journal talked to Appalachian State AD Charlie Cobb, and he basically said everything is on the table:

“If you look at the FBS — Conference USA, what the Sun Belt might do and the Mid-American Conference is one that has had conversations about possible expansion — and then the WAC (with two football members remaining) has something of value in that it is an FBS league…

There are a lot of different conversations involving a lot of different scenarios and I don’t think any of them have really fleshed themselves out and risen to the level to where a number of interested schools can say there is a solution.… It still needs to evolve.”

Personally, unless Georgia Southern comes with us, I’d rather join the MAC than the Sun-Belt. Not because of geography, but because of direction.

The Sun Belt has already shown their leadership is good for nothing. They’ve added a bunch of startups and most of their big-time schools are gone. I mean MTSU is the absolute BEST school they have. We are already better than most of the schools in that conference and we’re in the freaking SoCon. If we were on equal footing scholarship wise, it would be no contest.

The MAC is moving slow, but they will end up ahead of the game I think. They have 13 right now. Add us, JMU, and 1 other school like Delaware and you have a conference that’s better than the Sun-Belt almost automatically.

In any case, it doesn’t matter what conference we end up in. We’re gonna be good no matter where we go and I think Cobb knows that. We just need a conference smart enough to look past our supposed lack of market and we’ll be good to go.

**UPDATE**

The WAC finally released an official statement after their meetings ended. They said a whole lot of nothing:

“The WAC Board of Directors continues to aggressively evaluate membership options,” WAC Interim Commissioner Jeff Hurd said. “We remain confident in the league’s future and will continue to survey and discuss several options.”

I agree that the MAC with those additions would be the superior conference. But, even with the SunBelt’s lack of talent I still see AppSt being a better fit in that conference, what with the whole Southern aspect to App. I just see the Fans getting more excited to play Troy than a Directional Michigan school or Buffalo.

A MAC with JMU & UDel is better than a SBC without GaSo.
A SBC with GaSo is better than MAC, without JMU & UDel

I think CUSA would be great for APP, Rivals with ECU,Marshall, and UNCC would be great. Throw in ODU, this would be a sweet deal. I would love to see APP State in the MAC though, from a TV marketing standpoint.. UMASS caught on fast and moved up smoothly. App State should had taken note and did the same. Neitherless APP State would dominate the WAC & Sun Belt right now. App State will get invited, the only question is to where?

I don’t see CUSA being the best place especially if ECU gets picked up by the Big East in all the future shuffle.
