June 1: WAC D-Day? Or Not So Much?

If you’re interested in the whole WAC-East scenario that App State may or may not be getting involved in, you probably already know today was an important day.

June 1 has been thrown around as the due date to reclassify to FBS because NCAA regulation 20.4.2.1.2 says:

The notice [of intention for a school to reclassify to FBS] and application shall be received in the national office (by mail or electronic transmission) not later than June 1 two years prior to the August 1 when the institution intends to reclassify to the Football Bowl Subdivision. Any form received after June 1 shall be postmarked not later than May 25.

Well it’s June 1, the WAC only has 2 football teams left and didn’t add any today (that they’ve announced). So as an FBS football conference the WAC is dead right?

Well according to this ARTICLE:

Currently the rules spell out that there is a 2 year grace period for the WAC to rebuild, meaning really that all the WAC has to do is have 8 football-playing, all-sports members by 2014 to retain their “FBS conference” designation.

In those terms, really all the WAC needs is 6 schools to submit their intent paperwork by June 1st, 2013.  They have a full year.

With the SoCon meetings going on right now, and the WAC meetings happening in about a week…hopefully we will know SOMETHING soon, but it doesn’t look like it will be today.

My guess? We are gonna stick with the SoCon until next year when the Big East falls apart and rebuilds again. Then we are going to be welcomed with open arms to either C-USA or the Sun Belt.

But if this whole WAC-East thing somehow came together it could be a good thing. The names being thrown around are better than the teams the Sun Belt and C-USA just added. For football-only it could make a ton of sense.

There’s no doubt the WAC has to do something to survive.
