The purpose of this is not to get anyone excited about an impending invite. If anything this shows me we aren’t anywhere close to an immediate invite. But ECU’s AD Terry Holland was on ESPN730 earlier today and I’ve attached the audio for you to listen. Other than hyping up how big the crowds are when they play App State, the critical thing he said was:
“The only frustration we’ve really had with C-USA is we only have 1 vote out of 12. We’ll now only have 1 vote out of 14. But there’ll be other schools similar to ourselves, Old Dominion and Charlotte, which now really give us possibly 3 votes when we can agree on things that are good for the conference, in the eastern time zone.
And you add in Marshall, that’s 4 votes. You add in Florida International, and that’s 5 votes in the eastern time zone. And all of a sudden we can have more input than we’ve ever had, through that collective agreement between the institutions to work for the good of the eastern time zone.
Hopefully we’ll be able to host more conference championships and that type of thing and also vote for more members. More members like ourselves which could include an Appalachian State, or whoever may be in the region, that would be important for us to be able to play against in a conference situation.”
Personally, I don’t see UNCC voting for us anytime soon, but you never know. It’s also important to point out that the interviewer is the one who brought up Appalachian State and maybe Holland was just being polite by listing us as a vague possibility. In any case, ECU seems to be the only cheerleader for our C-USA candidacy.
