Oh Sun Belt Conference, just when I thought you couldn’t get any dumber…you go and add UT-Arlington….AND TOTALLY REDEEM YOURSELF!!!
Just kidding…who the hell is UT-Arlington? I’ve LIVED in Texas and I’d never heard of them until the Sun Belt decided they HAD to have them.
According to CBS Sports, the Sun Belt had their little conference meeting thing and decided they wanted UT-Arlington and no one else. Sun Belt commissioner Karl Benson said:
“We are not pursuing additional members at this time…At this juncture, the Sun Belt shouldn’t be considered a landing spot whether it’s an FCS member or an existing FBS member.”
The Sun Belt official website had more DETAILS on their decision.
“As for the possibility of conducting a football championship game, in the near future the Sun Belt will conduct a very deliberate and thorough evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of a football championship game. At this time, the Sun Belt is committed to strengthening its current membership and taking advantage of the new members that have been added.”
Their 5-year plan basically says: “Make more money in the next 5 years.”
This is obviously all a huge mistake by the Sun Belt. With the looming FCS-FBS moratorium potentially cutting off their lifeline when they get raided again, they’ll be wishing they had reconsidered.
Sure, it’s possible that they secretly wanted us but App State AD Charlie Cobb decided to hold out for C-USA. I sure hope that’s not the case, because with 2 NC schools already, I’m not holding my breath for a C-USA invite until they get raided again.
With several SoCon schools on the CAA expansion short list, our current conference home is only going to get less and less attractive. But we might have to get used to it, at least for another year. Until then I’m just going to refer to C-USA and the Sun Belt as Dumb & Dumber.
